Getting paid is the whole point. But as a non-US resident running a US LLC, the payment infrastructure question is more complex than it looks. This is the definitive guide: Stripe, PayPal, Wise, Mercury, Relay — what works, what doesn't, and exactly how to set it up.
THE FOUNDATION: YOUR US BUSINESS BANK ACCOUNT
Before you can accept payments, you need a US business bank account. This is where many non-residents get stuck. Traditional US banks (Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo) generally require in-person account opening in the US. The good news: modern fintech banks have solved this problem.
Mercury: The best option for most non-resident LLC owners. Fully online account opening, no minimum balance, no monthly fees, excellent API and Stripe integration. Accepts applications from most countries. This is our default recommendation.
Relay: Similar to Mercury, with slightly different features. Good alternative if Mercury doesn't accept your country of residence.
Wise Business: Not a traditional bank account but a multi-currency account that gives you local account details in USD, EUR, GBP, and more. Excellent for receiving international payments and holding multiple currencies.
STRIPE: THE GOLD STANDARD FOR ONLINE PAYMENTS
Stripe is the payment processor of choice for most online businesses. With a US LLC and a Mercury account, you can create a fully functional Stripe account that accepts credit cards, debit cards, and bank transfers from customers worldwide.
The key advantage: Stripe's US entity gives you access to lower processing fees, better fraud protection, and the ability to accept payments in 135+ currencies. Payouts go directly to your Mercury account.
PAYPAL: STILL RELEVANT, BUT WITH LIMITATIONS
PayPal remains widely used, particularly for B2C transactions and marketplaces. A US LLC with an EIN can open a US PayPal Business account, which gives you access to lower fees and faster payouts than a personal account. However, PayPal's compliance requirements have become stricter — you will need to verify your identity and business details.
WISE BUSINESS: THE MULTI-CURRENCY SOLUTION
If you invoice clients in multiple currencies, Wise Business is invaluable. You get local account details in USD, EUR, GBP, AUD, and more — meaning clients can pay you via local bank transfer without international wire fees. Wise converts currencies at the mid-market rate, which is significantly better than traditional banks.
THE COMPLETE PAYMENT STACK
For most non-resident LLC owners, the optimal setup is: Mercury as your primary US business account → Stripe for card payments → Wise Business for multi-currency invoicing → PayPal as a secondary option for clients who prefer it.
This combination covers virtually every payment scenario, gives you access to the best rates, and keeps your business infrastructure entirely US-based — which is important for maintaining the tax-exempt status of your LLC.
