The character of the state

In 1884, a young New York politician lost his wife and his mother on a single day, fled to the Badlands of North Dakota and came back a different man. "I would not have been President had it not been for my experience in North Dakota," Theodore Roosevelt later said. The state has never shed that role: it is America's place to disappear and start over, the least visited, least mentioned corner of the Union, which since the Bakken boom, of all things, sits on a sea of oil.
