Picture this: you are sitting in a café in Lisbon with your laptop, closing a consulting deal with a client in Singapore. Next week you are writing code for a San Francisco startup while working from the mountains of Georgia. You are a digital nomad. You are living the dream of freedom and independence.

But in the middle of all that freedom, one question keeps nagging at you: how on earth is the business side supposed to work?
-
How do you issue a professional invoice that is accepted worldwide?
-
Which bank account do you use to receive payments in different currencies?
-
And the biggest question of all: where in the world do you actually pay tax once you no longer have a fixed home?
The "freelancer with a residence in a backpack" model quickly falls apart when it comes to running a business professionally. Your business needs a home. A recognised, stable and flexible jurisdiction. You need a US LLC.
At Mount Bonnell Advisors and ZeroTax LLC we show you why the US LLC is the perfect vehicle for digital nomads and how to use it to build a structure for real, global freedom, along with the realities you must not ignore.
Why the US LLC is the perfect home for your digital business
For a location-independent service provider (consultant, coach, developer, designer, marketer), the US LLC is not just one option; it is by far the most elegant solution.
-
Global professionalism: An invoice from "Your Service LLC" in Wyoming, USA, carries a different weight from an invoice from "John Smith, currently in Thailand". You are immediately seen as a serious, international company.
-
Access to the best financial system: A US LLC opens the door to the US financial ecosystem. You get a Mercury bank account and can use Stripe without any trouble, the gold standard for online payments. That alone solves 90% of a nomad's practical problems.
-
Liability protection: The LLC separates your private assets from business risk. If a client sues you, your personal savings are protected. That is basic business hygiene.
-
Zero tax in the United States: And here comes the game changer. If, as a foreign owner without employees, an office or any other "fixed place of business" in the US, you sell digital services to clients worldwide, you are generally not engaged in a US trade or business (ETBUS). Your income counts as foreign-source income. The result: no US income tax on your profits.
The big freedom: who can really be tax free
"Zero tax in the US" is fantastic. But does it mean you pay no tax at all any more? The answer depends on one single factor: your personal tax situation.
The ideal case
If you have pulled up stakes in a high-tax country, left it properly and now either live as a "perpetual traveller" without a fixed residence or have your residence in a country with territorial or zero taxation (for example the UAE/Dubai, Panama, Paraguay), the dream is within reach.
The chain is perfect:
-
Your US LLC makes profits and pays no US income tax on them.
-
You as an individual pay no tax on these profits in your new country of residence, because it either has no income tax or exempts foreign income.
That is the definition of global tax freedom. You have structured your life and your business so that you have legally stepped out of the system of crushing tax burdens.
Reality catches up: VAT and sales tax
Fine, you have your income tax under control. But don't think that means you are done with taxes. Now we are talking about the taxes that can fall on your services themselves: consumption taxes.
The EU VAT dilemma
If you sell digital services to private customers (B2C) within the EU, there is a clear rule: VAT is due where the customer is located.
-
Example: You are in Portugal and, through your US LLC, sell an online course for €100 to an end customer in Germany. You have to remit €19 of German VAT.
-
The solution: Your US LLC registers for the OSS (One-Stop Shop) scheme in one EU country (Ireland is a frequent choice). Through this portal you report and pay, quarterly, the VAT collected on all your B2C sales across the whole EU.
-
B2B sales: If you sell to other businesses in the EU, the simpler reverse charge mechanism usually applies. You do, however, have to check your customers' VAT numbers and state them correctly on the invoice.
The US sales tax trap
Even if you pay no income tax in the United States, you can, in certain circumstances, be required to collect US sales tax. This happens when you trigger a so-called "economic nexus" in a particular US state.
That means: if you exceed a certain revenue threshold (for example $100,000) or a certain number of transactions (for example 200) with customers in a single US state, you may have to register for sales tax in that state and collect it from your customers there. This is an extremely complex topic, because every state has different rules and rates and many digital services are taxed differently. For most small service providers the risk is low at first, but it grows with success.
The perfect setup for the digital nomad
-
Status quo analysis: Clarify your personal tax situation. Where are you (or where do you plan to be) tax resident? This is the all-important first step.
-
A professional LLC formation: A Wyoming or New Mexico LLC, including an EIN and a Mercury US business account, is your foundation.
-
Clean invoicing and payment processing: Use your LLC for all invoices and Stripe to accept payments easily.
-
VAT management: Analyse your customer base. If you have many EU private customers, plan the OSS registration proactively. Keep an eye on your US sales to manage sales tax risks.
-
Professional compliance: Take care of the annual US reporting obligations (Form 5472, annual report and so on) to keep your company clean and active.
Freedom through structure
The US LLC is without doubt the best tool in a digital nomad's arsenal. It offers a professional image, access to first-class financial tools and, with your personal situation set up correctly, the potential for a drastic reduction in your income tax burden.
But it is no free pass out of the world of bureaucracy. "Zero tax" on profits does not mean "zero obligations". The complexity of global consumption taxes is real.
Real freedom does not come from ignoring rules, but from intelligently designing a structure that stands up to them.
